Deutsche Bank supports World Water Day and Earth Hour
March 16, 2009
Deutsche Bank will this month support two key initiatives designed to promote environmental sustainability around the globe – World Water Day and Earth Hour.
Over the years, Deutsche Bank has steadily increased its focus and resources to develop green and sustainable projects across divisions, regions and markets.
As a global corporate citizen, Deutsche Bank has a shared responsibility to combat climate change. Efforts are being made across all the regions in which Deutsche Bank operates to improve the Bank’s ecological footprint.
During the week commencing 23 March, activities and events to support World Water Day and Earth Hour will take place in many of Deutsche Bank’s landmark buildings.
World Water Day is held annually on 22 March to raise awareness of the sustainable management of water resources.
The day was first recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNECD) with March 22, 1993 declared as the first World Water Day.
Each year World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of fresh water. In 2009 the focus is on ‘Shared Water – Shared Opportunities’ and transboundary waters.
Deutsche Bank is committed to reducing its water consumption. Jeff Baer, Global Head of Sourcing and CRES, has set a Bank-wide challenge to save 20 million litres of water in 2009, compared with 2008.
On Monday 23 March, a number of our landmark locations in New York, London, Frankfurt, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, Tokyo and Mumbai will be participating in World Water Day to raise employee awareness around the Bank’s water saving initiatives. Tips will also be provided about reducing personal water usage, and how to contribute to charities who work to provide freshwater resources.

Earth Hour 2009 takes place on Saturday 28 March at 8.30pm.
The event began in Sydney in 2007 when 2.2 million people switched off their lights for an hour to conserve energy. By 2008 Earth Hour had grown to 50 million people in 370 cities worldwide.
This year Earth Hour aims to reach 1 billion people in 1000 cities in 64 countries around the world.
Deutsche Bank has participated in Earth Hour since 2007 by switching off all non-essential lighting in APAC locations. We will be participating again this year across APAC, the UK, Germany and the US.
These events provide Deutsche Bank with an important opportunity to raise awareness of water and energy savings initiatives across the Bank, as well as to provide information on Deutsche Bank’s wider commitment to sustainability – both globally and locally.
